A nobleman was slain. The butler says the cook is guilty. The cook says the gardener did it. The maid swears she didn't kill the nobleman. The stable boy says the cook is lying. If only one of these speaks the truth, who killed the nobleman?
EDIT: There are only two scenarios in which I will respond.
1) When you are correct.
2) When I'm clarifying something in the riddle.
Also note that I will not accept guesses. If you make a correct guess, I will ask "Why?" in private.

Here's how:
Okay, this is more of a logic problem than anything. We can solve this easily by making assumptions. We know two things.
1) One, and ONLY one of these guys killed the nobleman.
2) One, and ONLY one of them, is telling the truth.
Assumption 1:
The Butler is telling the truth.
Then:
The cook is guilty.
Everybody else is lying.
The maid is lying when she says she didn't commit the murder.
We can't have two people killing the nobleman, so that's out.
(This works with the truthtelling Cook, too)
Assumption 2:
The Maid is telling the truth.
Then:
The maid is innocent.
Everybody else is a liar.
The cook is telling the truth. (lying stable boy)
The cook is lying and telling the truth.
That doesn't work at all.
Assumption 3:
Stable Boy is telling the truth.
Then:
The cook is lying. So is everybody else.
The cook isn't guilty (lying butler)
The gardener isn't guilty (lying cook)
The maid IS guilty (lying maid)
There you have it.
